On the application of a Monte Carlo method to the nuclear level density problem

Abstract

We calculate nuclear level densities in large shell model spaces by means of a Monte Carlo simulation based on the Metropolis sampling scheme. This technique, traditionally used for the simulation of dense molecular systems, seems very promising to determine nuclear level densities and spin-parity distributions.
