Abstract

The demage caused by an Inter-turn short circuit (ITSC) in electric motors is well know. Futhermore, the fact that it’s one of the most critical electrical faults in a Permanent Magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) makes its on-board detection increasingly important. On the other hand, the use of data-driven fault detection methods has gained great interest due to the availability and access to large amounts of data by intelligent sensors. In this perspective, this paper deals with the fault detection problem of an ITSC in a PMSM within the statistical framework of hypothesis testing. This approach does not require high computational effort and can be implemented in low-cost control units using elementary mathematical operations and look-up table for test statistics.
