Abstract

The significance of treating all fields or only one prescribed field at each radiotherapy session is evaluated using the concept of nominal standard dose as well as data from a mammalian cell survival curve. Analysis with either system demonstrates greater homogeneity of biological effect within the treatment volume when all prescribed fields are administered at each treatment session. The importance of this effect varies with the clinical situation.
