Abstract

The technique of treating only one prescribed field daily in a multi-field setup produces an increased biological effect upon the normal tissues. In a consecutive group of 18 patients with Hodgkin's disease all treated employing extended opposed fields on a 60Co unit and treating only one prescribed field daily, 8 patients have delayed complications attributable to radiotherapy. All 18 have been followed for more than four years. The concept of Nominal Standard Dose (NSD) has been utilized in this study to compare the dosages in critical areas, i.e., the heart and spinal cord, relative to the tumor dose. Tolerance was exceeded to a greater extent in the patients with complications.
