January 22, 2000 marked the 80th birthday of Nikolai Pavlovich Korneichuk, a prominent mathematician and Academician of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences. It is impossible to imagine the contemporary theory of approximation without Korneichuk's works. He made a decisive contribution to the development of methods of exact solution of extremal problems of approximation. Korneichuk began his scientific investigations relatively late (alter nine years of military service, participation in military operations during the Great Patriotic War, and completion of university correspondence courses). In 1959, Korneichuk defended his Candidate-Degree thesis and focused his attention on complicated problems formulated long ago. In 1961-1962, working as an assistant lecturer and deputy dean at the Dnepropetrovsk University, he published lbur works in Dokladv Akademi i Nauk SSSR (presented by A. N. Kolmogorov on the recommendation of S. M. Nikol'skii). In these works, he obtained, in particular, an exact solution of the well-known problem
