Abstract
An X-ray diffraction and metallographic investigation of the β phase of the gold-gallium system has been carried out. The X-ray powder pattern of the β phase closely resembles the pattern of the trigonal ζ′ phase of the AgGa system, but back reflection Laue patterns show that the β phase has true hexagonal symmetry. Metallographic evidence suggests the presence of a massive transformation similar to that found in CuGa alloys.
