Abstract

THESE notes deal with the non-Germanic, for the most part with the Romanic, element in Prof. Skeat's Etymological Dictionary of the English Language, ed. 4,1910 (S.D.). I have taken this dictionary as my startingpoint, because in this marvellous compendium of etymological research it must be allowed that, generally speaking, we may find the latest word that scholars have to say on the derivation of English words.
