Abstract

Both a single stage estimation scheme and a double stage estimation scheme are considered for lowering the mean square error for the estimator of the binomial p in a region around a prior interval information p ε [p1,p2]. The minimum discrimination information (MDI) approach is employed to build the schemes. This approach provides a simple way of specifying the prior interval information about the binomial p, and also allows to consider shrinkage type estimators. By means of the approach, MDI estimator, double stage MDI estimator and their variants are suggested, and their performances are compared with the previously proposed estimators. It is shown that the estimators compare favorably with the previously proposed estimators in terms of mean square error efficiency.
