Abstract
Puerto Rican identity has been constructed on the myth of racial harmony—the supposedly harmonious mestizaje of Taíno, Spanish, and African roots. While the ideology of mestizaje has been replaced with a more balanced multiculturalism in other parts of Latin America, the silencing of Afro-Puerto Ricanness has remained entrenched in the culture. Afro-Puerto Rican oral histories can counter discursive silence with salience. Afro-Puerto Rican Testimonies: An Oral History Project in Western Puerto Rico collected the oral histories of Afro-Puerto Rican narrators who bring to the fore the complex operations of situated Afro-diasporic memory work.
