Abstract
This paper is to investigate the machining rate of the hydrodynamic polishing process under the semi-contact lubricating condition. A mathematical model relating the machining rate and various machining parameters are proposed. The qualitative properties of machining rate under different lubricating conditions are obtained by the aid of simple statistic analysis. The analysis indicates that the relationships between machining rate and various parameters are not monotonic. The machining rate will first increase then decrease due to the film thickness reduction or tool roughness increase. The relationship between machining rate and film thickness, in a lubricating range covering the non-contact and semi-contact conditions, will reveal a twin-peak pattern. The experimental study confirmed that the twin-peak pattern does exist. The qualitative trends of experimental data are consistent with the analytical predictions. In addition, the machining repeatability is acceptable under the semi-contact condition, from an engineering point of view.
