Abstract

Today, the widespread use, in safety related applications or in mission critical systems, of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) is evidencing the necessity to guarantee an high level of the system reliability. The reliability index of the whole system is strongly influenced from the PLC hardware and software reliability. In the paper, after a brief discussion on PLC hardware reliability assessment methods, the problem of the software reliability assessment will be treated, with particular reference to its testing techniques. In particular, in the paper a method for development and testing of PLC software in critical applications will be presented, and in order to reduce the cost-effectiveness and time consumption of the verification and validation stages a tool to support automated software testing will be proposed.
