Abstract

We consider the correspondence between the O(3) nonlinear σ-model with the Hopf invariant at θ = π and a four-fermi SU(2) invariant theory in (2 + 1) dimensions. It is shown that the two theories have a very similar phase structure. This includes the pattern of breakdown of various symmetries and a spectrum of low-lying excitations. Both theories are renormalizable. This suggests their possible equivalence.
