Abstract

The article is devoted to the conditions for the preservation of languages of small nationalities. The factors leading to the disappearance of the language are listed, mainly associated with a decrease in the number of speakers, increased contacts, moreover, with more common and therefore prestigious languages, as well as with the language policy of the authorities. Among the factors contributing to the preservation of languages, an insignificant number of contacts, national identity and, again, language policy are named. It is noted that, as a rule, factors can interact, both strengthening and weakening the process. These observations allow us to draw conclusions about the measures necessary to preserve the languages of small peoples.
