Abstract

Two documents are discussed in this study. One of them accounts for the reasons for opening a madrassa in Baghdad State to stop the activities of Shiism, the other accounts for the reasons to open a madrassa in Ta\'iz province of Yamen to avoid the English Protestant missioners\' activities. The study is composed of two parts, one covering the establishment reasons for madrassas in the Seljuks and Ottoman times and the development of madrassa and also two documents with regard to the expansionism of the Shiite sect of Islam; the other part discussing the missionary activities in the Ottoman Empire and the reasons for opening a madrassa in Ta\'iz province of Yamen State. The two documents, both dating back to the nineteenth century, show that religious and sect related struggles continued from the beginning to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and that the Empire fought in this struggle by opening schools.
