Abstract

This article proposes an approach for finding the direct detection receiver decision statistics (i.e., the probability density function at the decision circuit input). The proposed approach is independent of optical and electrical filter choice, pulse shape, and modulation scheme. The additive noise, composed of the amplifier spontaneous emission, multipath interference, and other additive noise sources, is modelled as a stationary process with an arbitrary autocorrelation function. A comparison with the Gaussian approximation of decision statistics is given, and various aspects of the application of the proposed method in long-haul systems are discussed.
