Abstract
Photoelectron and Auger lines in ESCA spectra of the cobalt-oxygen system have been investigated. Differences in the shifts of these lines have been used to estimate the contribution from relaxation energy. It was found that relaxation energy in metallic cobalt is much greater then in CoO, whereas the relaxation term in Co 3O 4 is similar to that for the metal. True chemical shifts for Co 2+ and Co 3+ ions have similar values, indicating that the effective charge of Co 3+ ions is nearly the same as that of Co 2+ ions.
