Abstract

The Committee on Absorption and Transpiration was appointed in October 1931 and commenced functioning immediately thereafter. The subjects which have been assigned have nothing in common from the physical or chemical standpoint, their interrelation being based entirely on close sequence in hydrologic processes. Past research in these subjects has been undertaken by differing types of organizations, with diverse technical background and special objective, and there has been little coordination. As a result, fundamental concepts, observational methods, character of auxiliary data, and the form and character of results have been governed by the ideas of the individual investigator, and there has been little standardization. Original research in these subjects has been active in recent years and many important research projects are now in progress. It is thus evident that the Committee has undertaken its work of correlation and coordination not only in diverse and virgin fields, but in ones where there is much existing material to be assembled. These conditions and the short time available for organizing its work are offered in explanation of the sketchy character of this report with its incomplete descriptions of important research work and evident omissions. If the report serves to bring information of other research activities to the Committee, it is felt that a valuable result will have been obtained.
