Abstract

A spilite pillow-lava occupies the centre of a syncline in the Bala volcanic rocks above Llyn Idwal, which latter lies in a corrie on the west side of the Nant Ffrancon Pass. The pillow-lava forms the steep pitch in the Devil's Kitchen, well known to rock climbers in North Wales. Calcite dissolved from vesicles in the lava is probably an important factor in determining the richness of the mountain flora of Cwm Idwal.
