Abstract

The nonlinearity observed in the flow-birefringent data can be explained by considering a properly formulated constitutiv relation, and is seen to be a natural consequence of the representation of a tensor function. The optical relation proposed is valid for a general threedimensional flow and, in addition, gives a meaning to the isoclinics in terms of the strain-rate components.
