Abstract

The combination of olmesartan both with a thiazide diuretic or with amlodipine has been shown to confer an additional blood pressure-lowering effect, with good tolerability and fewer adverse effects. Few studies have evaluated differences among therapeutic regimens that include olmesartan in association with diuretics or amlodipine. These differences are due mainly to effects unrelated to the blood pressure-lowering effects of drugs used in combination with olmesartan, since both combinations are similar in their antihypertensive efficacy. This article reviews the effects of both combinations, bearing in mind several factors such as the metabolic risk of hypertensive patients, their age, blood pressure variability, and central blood pressure.
