Abstract

1. A study has been made of the catalytic activity of WO3, aluminum tungstate, and impregnated alumina-tungsten catalysts (4 to 32% WO3/A12O3) in the oligomerization of isobutylene. The alumina-tungsten oxide catalysts acquire their maximal activity when activated in a current of air at 600–800°C. The optimal reaction temperature is 150°C, and the optimal composition of the catalyst is 32% WO3/A12O3. 2. A kinetic equation is proposed for the reaction which satisfactorily explains the experimental data and its acid mechanism on aluminum oxide/tungsten oxide catalysts is established. 3. The activity of the catalysts studied is determined by the presence of aluminum tungstate and tungsten trioxide.
