Abstract
Purpose: We aimed to create a statewide program to support and promote best breastfeeding practices in all 106 birthing hospitals in Ohio. Methods: With support from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA), a statewide coalition of breastfeeding-focused professionals collaborated to launch “Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies” in 2015. The program, modelled on successful initiatives in North Carolina and Texas, is a voluntary breastfeeding designation program that recognizes maternity centers in Ohio for taking steps to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding.
