Abstract

This piece looks at the 'outsider' in English cricket and in particular focuses on the position of the overseas player in the amateur game. It draws upon a survey of amateur cricket leagues in England and Wales and interviews with players and officials within these leagues. Central to the analysis are issues of inclusion/exclusion, identity and belonging; notions that are explored in depth within the context of national and local identity in the quintessential English game.
