Abstract
The Royal College of Physicians, the most powerful and respected of the UK's Royal Colleges, has chosen its new president—Sir Richard Thompson, a retired consultant physician from Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, and treasurer of the College. His manifesto for the job was luciferous. He promised a “higher risk strategy”. He saw a body of “disillusioned” doctors who had suffered “ineffective” leadership while “irreparable damage” had been done to British medicine. The new President wanted to win a “higher political profile” by taking a “much stronger stance”, reversing his view that “our College's opinion has too often been ignored”.
