Abstract

AbstractPerturbed off‐centre Cu+ ions by Cl− ions in KI and by I− ions in KCl are studied using uniaxial stress induced dichroism on the Cu+ uv absorption band and ionic thermocurrent (ITC) technique. Barrier height for the Cu+ reorientation is found to have a small decrease as compared with pure KI crystal. The symmetry of the multiwell potential minima changes from 〈111〉 orientation in KI to 〈110〉 in mixed KI + KCl crystals. When I− ions are added to KCl the off‐centre behaviour of the Cu+ is found to degenerate in a single deep potential well.
