Abstract

Off-axis electric field due to cylindrical distribution of charge is studied in various geometries, including solid cylinder, cylindrical shell, disk, and ring. The electric fields of the charged solid cylinder and cylindrical shell can be found by numerical calculations, but closed forms expressed in terms of elliptic integrals are derived for the charged disk and ring. By investigating the radial and axial components of the electric fields systematically we reveal many interesting and new features that are implicit or unseen in the ordinary approach based on the cylindrical symmetry.
