Abstract

In the decay of the 1118 keV resonance of the 27Al(p, γ) 28Si reaction, a state at 8.41 MeV is excited which almost exclusively decays to the 6.88 MeV ( J π = 2 −) state. Also a state at 9.70 MeV decaying to the 8.41 MeV state is seen. To analyse the angular correlations observed, a statistical tensor representation is used in order to avoid the effects of the limitation based on the correlations by the multipolarities of the γ transitions. The necessary methods for a statistical tensor analysis are given. The analysis gives the spin and parity of the 8.41 MeV states as J π = 3 −, and the multipolarity of the transition to the 6.88 MeV state as almost pure quadrupole. The resonance level, at an excitation energy of 12.67 MeV, has J π = 4 −. The decay of the odd parity resonance level to states of odd parity is attributed to the effect of the isobaric spin selection rule on dipole transitions.
