Highlights
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), is a retrovirus which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)[1, 2]
Literature has suggested that herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) might be the initial clinical manifestation of HIV infection in young individuals[20], those younger than 50 years of age 21-23
Anterior segment manifestations of HIV/AIDS have been noted in about 50% of HIV-infected individuals[15] and include corneal infection and anterior chamber inflammation
Summary
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), is a retrovirus which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)[1, 2]. Literature has suggested that HZO might be the initial clinical manifestation of HIV infection in young individuals[20], those younger than 50 years of age 21-23. The initial infection with the virus usually confers lifelong protection against subsequent attacks in about 20% of cases, reactivation occurs and is more common in immune-compromised individuals like those who are organ transplant recipients, those who suffer from AIDS, neoplasm or blood dyscrasia[25].
