Abstract

The small mammals of Ellis County, Kansas, have been studied by biologists of Fort Hays Kansas State College for several years. However, these studies have been confined largely to the prairies, and have omitted the streambank associations. A recent comparative study of various habitats in the county included a streambank association; there, for the first time in Ellis County, the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) was captured. After the white-footed mouse was found on Big Creek, near the Fort Hays Kansas State College campus, four other areas were trapped, two on the Smoky Hill River and two on the Saline River, to learn if the species occurs elsewhere in Ellis County. The white-footed mouse was captured on both rivers. All individuals captured were assigned to the subspecies aridulus.
