Abstract

THE characterization of complexes formed in vitro between phage DNA and bacterial ribosomes has been described by several workers1–5. I have found that ribosomes, isolated and purified from extracts of E. coli cells, contained what appeared to be a monodisperse DNA component. This could be taken to imply that the DNA is bound to a component of the ribosomal preparation; or alternatively that the size and shape of the DNA molecules allow them to pellet with the ribosomes without binding. The monodisperse nature of this DNA and its possible association with the ribosome prompted a more detailed study of this component in terms of its molecular weight, base composition and homogeneity. The question of its binding to a component of the ribosomal preparation has also been investigated.
