Abstract
Abstract Mitosis within small syncytia is synchronous. Within larger syncytia there is a phase lag throughout the syncytium. The mitotic stimulus appears to be provided by the nematode only during the pre-moult phase of development since synchronous mitosis has not been observed in syncytia associated with nematodes in the post-moult stage. Cell wall breakdown and cell fusion have been observed in the early stages of syncytial development. There is an irregular and often considerable increase in total nucleolar size within syncytial nuclei during the growth of a syncytium. It is thought that syncytia grow by a combination of cell fusion and synchronous mitosis without cytokinesis.
