Abstract

The dislocation model of grain boundary structure is first summarised, and its main advantages and limitations considered. The notions of reference structure and reference lattice are outlined in order to illustrate the characterisation of primary and secondary dislocations. The idea that primary dislocations are perturbations of the fundamental periodicity in single crystals, and that secondary dislocations are perturbations of periodic arrays of primary dislocations is developed.
