Abstract

The vortex lattice in YNi 2B 2C has been observed on the c-surface by low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy at 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 0.5 T parallel to the c-axis. The c-surface which is prepared by cracking or cutting the single crystal at 4.2 K in helium gas is rather flat and shows a step structure whose height is about 1.5 nm. We have found that the quasiparticle density of states at the Fermi energy on the step edge has increased when the vortices are near the step edge.
