Abstract
The authors report the first detection of fast muonium atoms formed in the 2S state. Approximately 115 2S muonium atoms per second, with velocities from 0.006 to 0.02 times the speed of light, were produced in a vacuum from gold and aluminium foils bombarded with 5*104 positive muons per second having incident kinetic energy 2.1 MeV. The Lamb shift in the n=2 excited state has been measured to be 930(+570/-640) MHz.
