Abstract

Two twist grain boundary phases (TGB) have been observed in binary liquid crystalline mixtures exhibiting a nematic – smectic A – smectic C triple point. The observed TGB phases are very stable – for some concentrations the temperature ranges exceeded 20 K for each of them. Optical properties and textures have been investigated. Phase transitions between the phases under discussion have been determined by measurements of the dielectric permittivity and the optical rotation. A distinct influence of surface interactions on the stability of the twisted smectic A phase was observed.
