Abstract
Excitations of bending modes in transitions from a linear ground state to a linear ionic state are normally very weak in He (I) photoelectron spectra; however, we have recently shown that, using a high resolution, high sensitivity photoelectron spectrometer, it is possible to observe these weak bending modes and that the occurrence of such transitions is not uncommon. With this in mind, we have re-examined the spectrum of acetylene and have observed several new features attributable to the cis and/or trans bending modes in the X2πu ground state of the ion.
