Abstract

Abstract Multiple Coulomb excitation of the 734.6 keV 0 +′ level in 98 Mo has been observed by the detection of its E0 decay. The conversion electron intensity was measured relative to that of the ground state decay of the 787.5 keV, 2 + level. A large reduced E2 transition probability of B (E2, 0 +′ → 2 + ) = 0.293±0.014 e 2 · b 2 is found, which exceeds the prediction of the model of nuclear surface vibration by nearly a factor of three.
