Abstract

AbstractConcrete in tension and low confined compression is characterized by strain‐softening, which leads to highly localized cracks or shear bands. Attempting to incorporate this response in standard continuum descriptions causes numerical instabilities and mesh sensitive results. This work presents a regularized plasticity‐damage model, which ensures mesh objectivity for general multixial strain softening. Combining plasticity and damage is necessary to describe the cyclic response of concrete. The damage part contains a split to consider the transition between compression and tension. Regularization of the model is achieved by an over‐nonlocal implicit gradient formulation. The model is implemented into a 3D finite element code and its capabilities are illustrated by numerical examples.
