Abstract
The Genitive of Negation is a phenomenon that has long intrigued linguists. In affirmative sentences, the direct object normally occurs in the Accusative case. However, the direct object in a negative sentence often — but not always — appears in the Genitive case. The Genitive case marking on the object in a negative sentence was historically obligatory (and still is required in Polish), but the obligation to use a Genitive in this context in modern Russian is decreasing.
