Abstract

Through widespread coverage of the risks of obesity in the scientific and lay press, is it right to assume that a patient has a clear understanding of these risks? The effects of obesity on the increasing incidence of diabetes and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality receives significant attention from central governments of the developed world. Those of us who work in women’s health care will also be aware of additional significant risks related to pregnancy, perioperative care and the increasing demand obesity places on care services in general.
