Abstract

The importance of the functional and structural changes that occur in the kidneys in association with obesity was discussed previously in the medical literature.1-4 These studies suggested that the kidneys are involved in the development of obesity-induced hypertension. This involvement is explained by an abnormal tubular sodium handling and by deposition of cells or matrix in the renal medulla that causes an increase in the renal interstitial fluid hydrostatic pressure.3,5
