Abstract
Obesity is a chronic, recurrent, heterogeneous, complex disease. It arises from an energy imbalance due to a sedentary lifestyle, excess calorie intake, or both, to which various genetic, social, behavioral, psychological, metabolic, cellular, and molecular factors must be added. This condition is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of adipose tissue. This increases the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, with important biological, psychological, and social implications. Its prevalence has increased globally, affecting all demographic groups. Multidisciplinary treatment focuses on lifestyle changes and is sometimes supplemented with medication. In extreme cases, bariatric surgery can improve the metabolic profile. This update will also focus in general on how excess weight behaves in pregnant patients, older adult patients, and patients with type 1 diabetes.
