Abstract

The thesis statement in argumentative essays is often incorrectly reinterpreted or misunderstood by teachers and students alike, which frequently leads to lower-quality essays in secondary school final exam papers. The thesis statement is the main point of the essay, explaining what the essay will be about and expressing the writer’s position on the subject. A correctly expressed thesis statement is typically a single sentence that consists of a topic, the writer’s position, and supporting evidence. It can be evaluated by considering a number of questions, such as “Does it answer the question?” or “Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose?”. An effective thesis statement does NOT announce the writer’s intentions, ask questions, or merely express an opinion on the topic. The position presented in the thesis statement may be based on facts, values, or cause-and-effect processes, and it may also include an alternative viewpoint.
