Analizirajući iz dijakroničko-komparativne pozicije neke pojave u indoevropskim jezicima, Benveniste je na zanimljivom materijalu opisao problem semantičke rekonstrukcije. Iako sàm naslov njegove rasprave »Semantički problemi rekonstrukcije«' navješćuje kompleksniju, »razbijeniju« problematiku, njezin osnovni sadržaj jest osvrt na semantičku rekonstrukciju kao pojavu a i kao metodologiju sui generis.
