Abstract

Created in 2006 as a microblogging service, Twitter in 2021 was considered the 16th most popular social network in the world, according to the number of monthly active users and, over time, has become one of the main platforms for political discussion. Taking content and discourse analysis as a reference, the objective of this article is to analyze the construction of the conservative discourse of the extreme right in relation to the issue of homosexuality, considering Jair Bolsonaro's positions on Twitter during the election years (2018 and 2022) and his government (2019-2022). From the analysis of the tweets, it was possible to understand a little the transversalities and complexities of the construction of a discriminatory and hateful discourse that sought to provoke moral panic in Brazilian society, as a strategy to increase its engagement on social networks and effectiveness in electoral campaigns.
