Abstract

Six edible mushrooms like Pleurotus sajar-caju, Pleurotus florida, Pleurotus austraeus, Astraeus asiaticus, Agaricus bisporus, and Lentinus edodes consumed in different parts of West Bengal, were considered here to research their nutritional and bioactive components by standard assay techniques. Acetone and chloroform extracts of all six edible mushrooms were subjected to different mycochemical assays, and antioxidant contents, and radical scavenging assays (DPPH). The moisture contents of these mushrooms ranged from 3.54 ± 0.30c to 93.61 ± 0.31a %, the protein ranging from 3.36 ± 0.12d to 28.53 ± 0.35a %, fat from 1.87 ± 0.08b to 8.61 ± 0.33a %, fibre from 11.49 ± 0.39c to 23.41 ± 0.11a %, ash from 0.78 ± 0.11c to 4.63 ± 0.25a %, and carbohydrate from 55.53 ± 0.32c to 70.25 ± 0.13a %. Among the extracts, Acetone extract of A. asiaticus had the highest phenolic content (15.84 ±1.10 mg GAE/g), acetone extract of P. sajar-caju had the highest flavonoid content (7.98 ± 0.47 mg QE/g), and acetone extract of P. florida had the highest ascorbic acid content (1.88 ± 0.23 mg AAE /g). The acetone extract of A. asiaticus demonstrated the highest level of radical scavenging activity and its IC50 value was 40.63±0.50 µg/mL. In conclusion, these mushrooms have the ability to serve good nutritional factors as well as natural antioxidants for beneficial to public health and the Astraeus asiaticus is the best among the others.
