Abstract

Pandemic-related nurse staffing shortages have warranted the introduction of new, innovative ways to transform nursing practice to ensure safe care delivery. The stage is set for virtual nursing, an innovative nurse practice model that layers an experienced nurse onto the care team to support the bedside nurse. Although this model of nursing care delivery is enabled by technology, the nursing workflow assessments and redesign are key to ensure the model of the technology supports efficiency and does not cause additional workload. Virtual nursing implementation requires a high degree of planning and consultation with bedside nurses to ensure workflows introducing technology are seamless. The success of virtual nursing implementation rests upon careful, rigorous nurse workflow assessments and redesign, both of which are equally as important as the technology to success.
