Abstract

From April 2006 trained nurses and pharmacists in the UK have been able to prescribe any licensed medicines for any medical condition with the exception of controlled drugs. The expected benefits of nurse prescribing are quicker access to medicine, increased patient choice, more efficient provision of services and better use of nurses' skills and knowledge. This presentation will focus on two studies evaluating mental health nurses prescribing. The first is a national census of mental health nurse prescribing in England and the second a qualitative study exploring and contrasting the views of patients, mental health nurses and psychiatrists involved in mental health nurse supplementary prescribing.
