Abstract
John Robert Smyth, Professor Emeritus of Poultry Science at the University of Maine, Orono, died at a Bangor hospital on August 9. He had retired from the University in 1961, after nearly 32 years as Head of the Department of Poultry Science.“Prof.” Smyth, as he was affectionately known by his thousands of friends and former students, was an exceptional teacher and counselor. He guided hundreds of poultry majors through their college programs to later positions in graduate schools and industry. Many of the opportunities for placement of majors in poultry science were the result of his diligent search for suitable positions. He received recognition by his fellow teachers in the Poultry Science Association in 1959 when he was awarded the Ralston Purina Resident Award of a plaque and $1,000.00.As Head of the Department of Poultry Science, Prof. Smyth directed poultry research and publication of results of the Maine .
