Abstract
An eight node plane stress element is formulated using a system of bars. These bars are located at the Gauss points and their widths are equal to the weights of the Gauss rule considered. It is shown that an ( n × n) integration rule yields, for the stiffness matrix, exactly the same values as a grid of ( n × n) bars located at the corresponding Gauss points. This analogy is used to justify the existence of mechanisms with underintegration.
